How much more imperfect can anything be - compared to love - and still be so sought after? How messed up and aggravating could anything else be that would get so many free passes and turns of the cheek? Nothing else would be tolerated the way love is - in spite of it all. From the very beginning, Bloc Party has written songs that are soaked in the idea that it's all a pain in the ass, but it's still the only thing most of us have going - whatever crumbs or whole parts of love that we're holding onto. It's still the ONE thing that we find ourselves caring about, looking for and killing ourselves to attain. It's that daily concern, the preoccupation that cooks our meals and heats our homes. This acoustic session performed by lead singer Kele Okereke and guitarist Russell Lissack, while touring through Asheville, North Carolina, in January, strips these pained feelings down to their raw strands. The protagonist in one of the group's most well-known songs, "This Modern Love," sounds to be taking it harder and getting worked over a bit more. Okereke sings:"To be lost in the forest, to be cut adriftYou've been trying to reach meYou bought me a bookBaby, you've got to be more discerningI've never known what's good for meBaby, you've got to be more demanding I will be yours I'll pay for you anytimeI'll pay for you anytime And you told me you wanted to eat up my sadnessWell, jump on, enjoy, you can gorge awayAnd you told me you wanted to eat up my sadnessJump right Baby, you've got to be more discerningI've never known what's good for meAnd baby, you've got to be more demandingJump left What are you holding out for? What's always in the way?Why so damn absent-minded?Why so scared of romance? This modern love breaks meThis modern love wastes meThis modern love breaks meThis modern love wastes me Do you wanna come over and kill some time?Do you wanna come over and kill some time?Do you wanna come over and kill some time?Throw your arms around me." It's that classic story with all the victims - feelings like victims and winners, all at the same time. They are people who love someone the most when they're hung over, when it feels like the closest they've gotten to what they think it's supposed to be, what it's supposed to feel like.
