As the official clown of the Grateful Dead, Wavy Gravy has made it into the hallowed halls of music history in a most unconventional way. Born Hugh Romney and dubbed Wavy Gravy by BB King, Wavy embodies the altruistic spirit of the 60's. With a Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavor named after him and called "the illegitimate son of Harpo Marx and Mother Theresa," Wavy Gravy has been a vibrant member of the hippie scene for the past 40 years. From sharing a NYC room with Bob Dylan to manning the commune/festival grounds Hog Farm to making the folks laugh at Woodstock with his proclamation "what we had in mind was breakfast in bed for 400,000," Wavy's contribution to music culture has certainly not gone unnoticed. It is his unwavering devotion to charitable causes however, that Wavy is most known for and on the eve of his 70th birthday, he is one of the most beloved, colorful humanitarians among us.
