A little bit heavy metal, a little bit alternative, Soundgarden meshes category-wise into the 1990s grunge scene although their early days saw more metal than radio-friendly hits. The Seattle-rooted band shifted from underground to mainstream with '95's Superunknown, an album that introduced the sultry vocals of lead singer Chris Cornell to a new generation of fans. Soundgarden stuck to its guns until 1997 when members disbanded to pursue other projects.
