Playlist Description

The 2011 Newport Folk Festival is just two weeks away (you can find more info on their web site here: http://www.newportfolkfest.net/), and as the next installment of that wonderful summer tradition approaches, we thought it would be a good time to look back at a bit of the Festival's history available here on Wolfgang's Vault. The selections on this playlist come from the 1968 and 1969 Festivals, and are a good example of what the institution continues to do through 2011: honoring the past through traditional Americana, while also staying a step ahead with the constantly changing definitions of folk music. So close your eyes, picture the ships out in the harbor and a breeze blowing across your face, and enjoy some tracks recorded over 40 years ago at the Newport Folk Festivals.
