Playlist Description

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote some of the catchiest tunes of the 20th century, many of which helped usher in the era of rock and roll. Even if you're too young to remember when songs like "Jailhouse Rock," "Hound Dog," "Stand By Me," or "Yakety-Yak" were originally topping the charts, chances are you still know the words. It may even be possible that humans have evolved slightly over the past 50 years and the Leiber/Stoller catalog is now hard-wired into our brains, giving us the innate ability to sing along. These are pretty straight-forward interpretations of their songs, but two notes are in order: 1 - That's Dion singing 'Ruby Baby,' a song he had a hit with 1962, six years after The Drifters first did. 2 - The 'Searchin' that ends the mix is a bit of a mess. This is the song from that night where the Grateful Dead invited the Beach Boys on stage to jam, so there's a lot of space where they're just tuning and putzing around. If you want to go straight to the meat of the song, skip ahead to around 3:45. And remember, before there was Classic Rock, there was classic Rock and Roll.
