This fourth night of the Dead and New Riders of the Purple Sage's final stint at the soon to be closing Fillmore East, is to many their best overall performance of the run.
The NRPS set, featuring Jerry Garcia on pedal steel, once again contains much of the classic material from their first and second albums. Cover versions of the Rolling Stones' "Connections" and "Honky Tonk Woman," Billie Joe Royal's "Down In The Boondocks," and the Band's "The Weight" also spice up the setlist. Prior to the set closer, "Honky Tonk Woman," the band spontaneously takes a
lighthearted stab at "Fun, Fun, Fun," a nod to the Beach Boys who had joined the Dead onstage the previous night.
Hitting an inspirational peak on this penultimate night of their final run,
the NRPS would continue to sustain their energy levels through one more night, leaving the air good and charged for the Grateful Dead's final farewell to the Fillmore East audience
