Liner Notes

The Evening Attraction are a psychedelic rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Now, before you jump to any conclusions about the term psychedelic, let me explain. Starting just about a decade ago, a revival of this genre took hold of indie rock music, or at least that phraseology did. This music was usually signified by oozy keyboard layers, mysterious sounds, and heavy flange/chorus/delay on the guitars. More recently, bands like Tame Impala have turned psychedelic music into a primarily electronic genre, at least in the popular music canon. But the true origins of psychedelic rock, and therefore arguably its purest form, lies in the music of the 60's. The Evening Attraction are not shy about their preoccupation with this decade. Their bandcamp is full of "60's rock" tags and their website lays out their influences, such as The Beatles and The Beach Boys. They stay true to this sound and revitalize that part of music history which was sandwiched between the straight-laced genesis of rock in the 50's and its subsequent obfuscation/destruction in the 70's and beyond. With all of the members being quite talented musicians, they pull off the vocal harmonies and melodic guitar riffs like any classic rocker would. Here in this session they're playing songs off their upcoming album, "The End, Again," which ends with a song called "The Beginning, Again." The album cover features the band sitting on a couch in a brightly colored field of sunflowers, watching a mushroom cloud take form. It's quite apocalyptic, but the mixed imagery properly represents what "flower power" would look like in 2018: blown to bits. Whether you're a youngling with a taste for pretty melodies and groovy rock music or a reminiscing baby boomer who's been looking for that good old sound since back in the day, The Evening Attraction might be your new favorite band.
