You'd think that everything was a big old blur of rushed energy the day that this "session" with Pond happened. You'd think that someone was running late or that they needed to hustle off before they were able to get everything accomplished. It was none of that. The band from Perth, Western Australia - a group that was recently dubbed as the Hottest New Band In The World by NME magazine - had none of those issues when it was here a few months ago. It was an early morning and they were intent on messing around with the rooms of old gear that we have lying around, with the expressed intent of recording just one song. They wanted to record the best and most psychedelic, or Pond, version of Kylie Minogue's song, "Slow."
The song, from Minogue's 2003 album, "Body Language," in the hands of the Tame Impala bassist Nick Allbrook and a group of associates and unshowered homies that go by the names of Wirey B. Buddha, Paisley Adams, Shoseph Orion McJam, Odin Bombadillo, Kaykay Sorbet, Ayayayai, Anabell, Acidtree, Aslan McPride, Celestius Maximus Argyle and Genii la Mojo, it's positively warped and of a different cloth. It's now a Pond song, which would have no problem fitting into the band's Modular Recordings debut album, "Beard, Wives, Denim," which drifts into many fuzzy corners.
It takes a call to come and dance with a women into something that goes beyond the seductive, crossing more into some vortex where you find yourself mesmerized, torn between the idea that you're gonna be damned if you go over there for this song, but there's no keeping you out of the arms of that possessed woman on acid, or whatever it might be. The song goes, "Don't want to rush it," but this is a moment of impetuousness, played out while tripping something fierce.
