Liner Notes

The underdogging qualities of Nakia come out in every song he writes, in everything he sings. It's that down in the dumps, scraping away just to get by quality of his existence that gets to us the most. It's externalizing the hardships, feeling the exhaustion of being trampled and ignored, of having dreams that no one else cares about but you. He's about hoping for the breaks to find him, wherever he's laying his head that night, for just the few hours of shut-eye that he'll afford himself before getting right back at the grind and the hustles that consume him, that he must stay on to keep surviving.

He believes in souls. He believes in determination and getting by on ambition and talent. He believes in the cream rising to the top. He believes in the folklore of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil at a crossroads. He believes in good things happening to good people. He probably gives impressive hugs. He savors love. He cries from time to time and he feels like he's going to go crazy with desire every other day. He believes in dreaming big and he sings, "The human heart has no limit to its size." As long as you believe in such a thing, very little can go too wrong. A person can get by on that alone.
