It's absolutely a coincidence, but feels mildly fated as well that I happen to be reading Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises," right now as I'm writing about Mikael Jorgensen's newest session. These songs, which he originally wrote as more standard rock and roll songs before turning all of the sounds into processed sounds and then messing with them even more to where the concept turned even more daft scientist, are what it might be like if Baz Luhrmann did to Hemingway what he did to Fitzgerald. Moments of these three songs make it easy to imagine the drinking and degenerative social behavior of the characters in this book -- their antipathy and their deeply felt need to experience, connect and explore, even if it's just to experience, connect and explore in ironical ways, taking pity on others and themselves. There is much life in these sad characters and Jorgensen's music has a stunning vitality that can't be denied, all while still containing a dark undercurrent that strikes at interesting times, giving us bridges and overtures that we didn't see coming. We could feel these songs accompanying Jake, Bill, Lady Brett Ashley and Robert Cohn as they sat for the bullfights in Pamplona or as they chilled bottles of wine in mountain streams while they trout fished and fell asleep in the cold sun.
