The opportunities for infidelity are all over the place, for those folks who can take advantage of them or not. With some lowered standards or some displaced morals and shameful behavior, anything can happen to turn a happy home into one of disruption, despair and broken dishes. A man can suddenly turn all of the waters choppy and vindictive, if he thinks with his wrong head. It's an old story -- the one of lust leading to immediate regret and either concealment or groveling, sometimes both. It's the road to ruin for many and yet there's no stopping it. Perhaps it's because there's always that thought in the back of the skull thinking that a second chance will be granted -- even if everything's goes horribly wrong, you'll get to cash in that mulligan. It happens all the time. A pledge of undying love wilts and then is given new life, after some uncomfortable times. It might not even take a full-on affair to necessitate some forgiveness. It could just be that you're chronically slow or poor at properly putting your clothes away, letting them pile up in the corner of the bedroom. You have to apologize for all kinds of things, but once you do...This is kind of the spot where Johnathan Rice brings us into his stories on his latest record, "Good Graces." Something's happened and someone's copped to it, working through the messiness to get back to a place where things are better. The man in the title track has been forgiven and he couldn't be more relieved. All of the dark clouds have parted and "it feels so good." You almost get a sense that it was all worth it -- that going through the ringer and the unfortunate hours brought about a better thing. It's the whole myth (or is it?) of make-up sex. Maybe there's something to it. Rice, with his lovely West Coast cool, makes us believers that we should all repent, if we need to and be ready to get back to that sweet spot.
