Hot Flash Heat Wave makes some of the most pleasing sounds I've ever heard. Not pleasant as in just nice to listen to, but pleasing, as in this is a band that collects disparate sounds of modern American music and arranges them in ways that remind you of your favorite songs not only from this generation but generations passed as well. It's freeing, like a small weight is being lifted from your shoulders.Hot Flash Heat Wave sounds like new-wave indie rock. I don't completely know what those words mean when they're next to each other but it just felt right. What's so strange about calling them new wave is that this "new" wave takes more inspiration from past decades, like the 80s, than did the indie rock bands of the early 2000s. They're tuned into the vapor-wave aesthetic without being derivative of it, instead using it as a springboard to jump into really well-crafted songs. Despite their penchant for catchy hooks, this is a very laid back band. Straight-faced singing on top of smooth rhythms and jazzy riffs makes for perfect surf music, without all the Beach Boys thrown in. With Hot Flash, the beach is grittier, grimier, but still real and American. The band has three lead singers, which in turn really makes none of them the "lead." There is a heavy sense of collaboration in Hot Flash Heat Wave; there is a feeling of anti-ego, both in the personal and psychological sense, like the songs aren't private statements but collective visions seen through tinted windows. Hot Flash performed their new single "Glo Ride" in this session, which is said to be an indicator of the sound one can expect from the band's future releases.
