There are too many parts of us that are complicated beyond belief. There are so many actions and occurrences that are downright impossible to comprehend. How a doctor can make a small incision in the leg and fix a heart is commonplace to them and mind-blowing to everyone else. Or, it should be. That things such as tornadoes can form and tear through everything it finds is unreal. The invisible power of some many things that happen in nature gives one dry mouth. The capabilities of human beings to create and destroy, to birth and to eliminate is frightening.
The music that Oliver Perry makes as D.D Dumbo is a bit reminiscent of all of the above. It's not that no one else has ever buffeted their songs with the skilled and experimental touch of loop pedals, but it might be that no one has ever done it so well. Quite the blustery statement, sure, but just seconds into these songs -- which seem to come from an old man lost at sea, stubbornly clinging to a battered raft and an even more splintered psyche -- and you feel as if you're in the cold waters with him, but you're being warmed. You're being cared for. You're getting nourishment from somewhere. Perry brings us to a dynamic place of wonder. We're young and we're old and we're here just by the grace of something holy or some convergence of a handful of unlikely, holy things.
