Joe Cocker's soulful, smoky rendition of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends" is one of rock's most famous interpretations, and his performance of that song at Woodstock in 1969 put him on the rock 'n' roll map. Success soon followed in the U.K. and America with albums Joe Cocker! and Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Although Cocker's powerful voice and animated stage presence deteriorated as he battled alcohol-related problems, he scored several hits in the '80s, and his loyal, long suffering fans were rewarded with the release of Respect Yourself in 2002.
