In the 1960s, 70 million kids became teens and young adults. At home and as soldiers in Vietnam, many young people experimented with drugs as a form of escape. Marijuana and heroin use by soldiers brought the Department of Defense to attention. Two years before Nixon mounted his "War on Drugs," the DOD co-opted the modern art of the day to propagate its message against drug abuse.
