This was actually the last show the Who did in the U.S. with Keith Moon as their drummer, concluding a six month tour. They played two outdoor gigs at the Oakland coliseum where the Grateful Dead were opening up for them. Both of the shows were absolutely incredible. To fill the Coliseum, you're talking 50 or 60 thousand people a day, on two successive days; that's pretty amazing. On this day they were incredibly dynamic. I really love this picture, because it's almost like you're in the band and you see both the stage, and looking out into the audience. You see Daltrey's swinging the microphone, Entwistle's doing his thing, and Townshend is doing his trademark scissor kick. I still get goose bumps and a rush of energy when I flash back to that Autumn afternoon. -Michael Zagaris

About Michael Zagaris
Michael Zagaris, known as 'the Z-man', offers the performer's eye view in his photography. Zagaris became the Stones, the Who, Led Zeppelin; not vicariously but actually. He donned the make-up and ran down the tunnel onto the stage. As an insider in those days, he took photographs of what was, not what one expected to see, and as an insider today he does the same thing for 21st century bands and artists. As team photographer for the San Francisco 49ers, a title he achieved in '73, and for the Oakland A's, Zagaris is sports' inside-out shooter. Ankles taped and knee pad-clad, he's the guy so familiar to the players that they see him as their own.
