Liner Notes

It's obvious that the people in Matthew Dear songs are harboring some dark hearts. They've gone on and influenced other body parts. They've melted and bled right into them, with seductive influence. Dear sums up his own possession, when he sings, "My heart/It weighs about a ton/It snakes/I feel hollow as a grave/I have to dig every day." It's a predicament, but there's nothing much that can be done to fix it. The heart can hardly be lightened. It retains its weight well, putting on those love handles and keeping them, dealing with them forever. The suffering and the pain just sticks to the ribs like a good layer of fat or meat, even if it doesn't collect in the old heart itself. The mood that Dear offers here is one of a pessimism that doesn't seem to rot a person though. It's just the kind that's under-spoken, whispered somewhat by those and to those queued up in the line at the nightclub - people who are there for the express purpose of negating that pessimism, who are intent on drowning out the sullenness that can only be drowned out, never silenced. They mean to find a good time, however quickly they'll be thrust back into what they have going on at home. They'll be right back there, dealing with the hollowness that they've crafted or inherited, as soon as the cruel morning light shoots in through their shutters. Dear has been dragged and has willingly gone into the fire and he's had a look around. He's not about to lie or pretend and "tell you that everything's fine" when it just isn't. Is it really all THAAAAT bad though? Nah, probably not. Still feels alright sidling up to these dark and heavy hearts.
