Our vintage concert postcards commemorate shows from Fillmore East, Fillmore West, Winterland and Avalon Ballroom.
Buffalo Springfield was the main feature in the pre-Christmas, 1967 concert, advertised on a poster that studiously ignored familiar Christmas tones. Alton Kelley collaborated with Stanley Mouse early in their careers and usually chose the photographs and arranged the collage while Mouse did the graphics.
The postcard was printed before the concert and measures 3 3/4" x 6 15/16". Some of the postcards were cut from the double-sized cards and measure 3 11/16" x 7".
There were also some pre-concert double-sized mailers printed that were conjoined with the BG097 image. They measure 4 1/8" x 14 1/16".
As a founding member of the Family Dog, Kelley handled promotions for the events at the Avalon Ballroom, drawing posters and handbills. He soon met up with Stanley Mouse, and their association nurtured Kelley's success as an artist. Kelley had a natural talent for collage and a keen eye for culling and combining imagery and styles from diverse sources. Teamed with Mouse's drafting skill, collaborations became increasingly sophisticated, yet irreverent. Kelley always worked by hand, producing posters and other print graphics for a wide array of entertainment-oriented clients.
