Bill Graham loved Latin dance music, and the beat of Brazilian jazz guitarist Bola Sete proved to be enormously popular for the Fillmore crowd too, at this three night gig. Country Joe & the Fish and Buffalo Springfield swirl and pool around Wilson's female nude as she parts the stage curtain.
All postcards were produced after the concert.
The postcard was first printed with the 2nd printing of the poster. 2nd printing A is on stock with no pattern, and there is a good deal of green inking variation within this run, ranging from light green to a medium forest color. The lettering of "Presented in San Francisco by Bill Graham" is larger than the subsequent printings, measuring 3 3/8" long from the "P" to the "M". Also, the "P" in "Presented" is positioned over the "B" in "Bola". 2nd printing A measures 4 3/4" x 8 5/16".
2nd printing B has a smaller typeface for the "Presented in San Francisco by Bill Graham" credit, measuring only 3" long. This BGP credit, and some of the other detail, is a brownish/black color. In the B printing, the woman's left shoulder shows an obvious printing flaw in which the purple border juts downward into her form. This error is not evident in the A printing. The "P" in "Presented" is over the "B" in "Bola", and this version also measures 4 3/4" x 8 5/16".
The 3rd printing A omits the above-mentioned shoulder flaw, and adopts the same smaller text for the BGP credit, but in this printing the "P" of "Presented" is over the "O" of "Bola". There is significant green inking variation, which lends itself to ranging shades, and there is a white border that highlights the green inking in this printing. It measures 4 13/16" x 8 5/16".
The 3rd printing B reintroduces the shoulder flaw as mentioned in 2nd printing B, but following the curve of the shoulder, there is a small gap that swoops slightly into the woman's form that is not visible in any of the other printings. Again, the "P" of "Presented" is stationed over the "B" of "Bola". To differentiate, the green ink is a paler shade and is accented by a white border in much of the detail, and like the previous three printings, it uses the same small text measuring 3" long. It is 4 13/16" x 8 5/16".
The 3rd printing C uses a darker green ink, places the "P" over the "O" of "Bola", does not have the shoulder flaw, and is backed with an invitation to a Valentine's Day gathering at the Fillmore. It measures 4 3/4" x 8 1/4".
When the Avalon Ballroom and Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium began to hold weekly dance concerts, Wilson was called upon to design the posters. He created psychedelic posters from February 1966 to May 1967, when disputes over money severed his connection with Graham. Wilson pioneered the psychedelic rock poster. Intended for a particular audience, "one that was tuned in to the psychedelic experience," his art, and especially the exaggerated freehand lettering, emerged from Wilson's own involvement with that experience and the psychedelic art of light shows.
