Most of the 1st printings are on thick vellum but some were printed on thinner stock, like that used for handbills. This black and white poster measures 14 1/4" x 20" and was printed before the concert.

The 2nd printing is 14 1/4" x 20 1/2" on uncoated index between .0071" and .0072" thick. This post-concert reprint bears "No.12-2" in the lower right corner and "(c) Family Dog Productions 1725 Washington Street San Francisco" in the lower left corner.

When the Avalon Ballroom and Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium began to hold weekly dance concerts, Wilson was called upon to design the posters. He created psychedelic posters from February 1966 to May 1967, when disputes over money severed his connection with Graham. Wilson pioneered the psychedelic rock poster. Intended for a particular audience, "one that was tuned in to the psychedelic experience," his art, and especially the exaggerated freehand lettering, emerged from Wilson's own involvement with that experience and the psychedelic art of light shows.
